Located just east of Ortley, this simple concrete slab span crosses 452nd Avenue at the intersection of US-12.
Built in 1912 during a line change and double tracking project, the bridge features a single concrete slab span. Unlike a couple of bridges in Grant County, the bridge has no decorative features and instead could be classified more as a box culvert.
This type of span is a simple design, commonly used along this line and others in the Milwaukee Road system due to the cheap and efficient construction.
Overall, the bridge appears to be in poor condition. Some spalling and cracking can be seen throughout the bridge, and the rebar is exposed in many places.
When the author visited this bridge, it was right after a major snowstorm. Evidence of this can be seen in the above photos, where massive snowdrifts had blocked the road.
The author has ranked this bridge as being locally significant, due to the common design and old age. The area to the east of the bridge is known as the "Smith & Walker Cut", a massive cut through the rolling terrain of the area. Citizens of Grant and Roberts Counties petitioned the railroad to build a station at the top of the hill, however the railroad decided instead to plat Ortley to the west of this bridge.
The photo above is an overview.
